Introduction: non-contagious diseases are a threat to the human being health and to the socioeconomic development. Objective: to estimate the prevalence of the main risk factors and chronic non-contagious affections in Pinar del Rio municipality during 2010. Material and method: a study of prevalence including a target group of 148 568 subjects of both sexes and ages between 15-74 was conducted, the sample consisted of 2515 subjects chosen by means of a complex stratified design and poly-stage conglomerates. To collect the information an instrument to carry out the surveillance of risk factors of chronic diseases was designed taking into account the Pan-American version (STEPS). The processing and analysis of results were performed using the statistical package SPSS to the design of complex samplings. Results: the prevalence of smoking was 23,5%; alcohol drinkers 19,4%, physically active at work and free time 21,7%; fruits and vegetables consumers reached only 13,8% and 15,2% respectively; 77,5% used cooking oil, of out them 58,6% had breakfast; obese 16,7%; hypertensive 34,1% with 9,9% of diabetic people; 11,1% suffered from hypercholesterolemia with hypertriglyceridemia (13,6%). Conclusions: prevalence regarding sex, age and geographical zone was high, and it was superior to the data obtained in a provincial study the same year, the greatest incidence was found in men, except for hypercholesterolemia, thus it is important to conduct studies for the surveillance of risk factors, to make possible a better health intervention in the population.
