Abstract

Introduction: periodontal disease is a common oral disease in the elderly. Objective: to assess the state of health of elderly people periodontal four grandparents houses in the province of Pinar del Rio in 2013-2014. Material and methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with analytical elements in 59 elderly grandparents from 4 houses in Pinar del Río, from September 2013 to September 2014 the level of knowledge on oral health was explored and performed physical examination, filling a data collection form. Summary measures for qualitative variables were used. To identify the association between risk factors and periodontal disease Fisher's exact test was used. To quantify the strength of association the odds ratio (OR) were calculated with confidence intervals of 95%. Results: 83.1% of the elderly studied had periodontal disease periodontitis prevalence of 57.8% with. Overall, the disease was superior in its mild form, in 63.6%. Poor oral hygiene and not restored missing teeth were the factors most common local risk (91.5% and 76.3% respectively). The level of knowledge was inadequate predominant in 71.18%. Significant association between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus with missing teeth was found not returned. Conclusions: the prevalence of periodontal disease was high with prevalence of mild form of this.
