Abstract

OTERO RODRIGUEZ, Iliana; VINENT GONZALEZ, Rosalina; PADRON GONZALEZ, Odalis  and  LEON MEDINA, Dianelys. Extensionist approach about HIV/AIDS in the training of Dentistry students. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2015, vol.19, n.4, pp. 691-700. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction: due to the characteristics of the human immunodeficiency virus and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, the dentistry professionals play an important role in early detecting their manifestations and in preventing transmission. Objective: to update the knowledge of Dentistry students about HIV/AIDS in students. Material and method: an intervention-action study was carried out with the 93 students of first and second academic years majoring in Dentistry in Pinar del Río, in the period from October 2012 to June 2013. The first stage aimed at identifying the needs for learning, with a survey anonymously conducted. In the second stage, extra-teaching educative actions were carried out, and last the results of the actions were assessed with the same survey. Results: in the diagnosis, the worst answers provided by the students regarded the obtention of information sources, average time in Cuba for the HIV incubation period and the universal blood and body fluids precaution. The over-achievement of the educative actions characterized the second stage, while in the third stage near 100% of the answers were correctly provided by over 85% of the students. Conclusions: the extra-teaching educative actions permitted updating the students about the topic of HIV/AIDS, creation of health promoters for capacitating the students themselves and the overall population, showing ways of professional performance in their functions as health professional.
