Abstract

Introduction:

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is a chronic transmissible disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Objective:

to characterize patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS infection in Guantanamo province during the period 1986-2020.

Methods:

an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at the Provincial Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology in Guantanamo province. The target group studied comprised 1212 patients. The variables used were: current age, age at diagnosis, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, school level, source of investigation, source of infection, municipality, years of evolution, and year of the diagnosis, clinical onset, last CD4 count, last viral load, clinical category and antiretroviral therapy used, as well as the current status of the patient.

Results:

the mean age was 39,8 years, 893 patients were male. Regarding sexual orientation 582 patients were heterosexual. Concerning the source of infection, 590 patients were homo-bisexual. The most affected municipality was Guantanamo (n=873). It can be stated that 815 patients had used Lamivudine as antiretroviral therapy, 356 patients had a CD4 lymphocyte count between 499 and 200, 769 patients had a viral load lower than 55 000 copies, 634 patients belonged to the clinical category A. Only 142 patients died from this disease. Only 142 patients died as a consequence of AIDS.

Conclusions:

the patients studied belonged mostly to male sex, mainly heterosexuals. Homo-bisexuals were the major source of infection. The most affected municipality was Guantanamo, with a high number of patients in the clinical category A.
