Abstract

LOPEZ CASTILLA, René A; FERNANDEZ VERA, Antonio  and  TRIGUERO ISASI, Natividad. Differential Incidence Determination of the Bark Beetle Insect (Coleoptera: Scolytidae: Ipini) to the Pines (Pinus caribaea Morelet, Pinus tropicalis Morelet) in Viñales, Pinar del Río, Cuba. Fitosanidad [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.2, pp.91-95. ISSN 1562-3009.

Pine wood forests in Alturas of Pizarras in Guaniguanico Mountain, in Pinar del Río Province, are an important part of country woods. More than 77 000 hectares of plantations and natural pines represent about 30% of Cuban total conifers. Bark beetle species of genus Ips are included in the most dangerous insects that cause losses in coniferous in the world. However there is no information about the difference of how these pine trees are harmed by these insects. The differential incidence of bark beetle from Ips genus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) on Pinus caribaea Morelet and P. tropicalis Morelet was the objective of this work. The research was carried out in plantations with the two pine species. One experiment was realized to determine differential incidence of these insects with a completely randomized block design in trunk of pines and other with periodical sampling design in alive tree in which was evaluated the number of adults, larvae, pupae and the pin orifices made by the bark beetle to 15 tree each 10 rows of pine. Data were analyzed by Fisher test (ANOVA) to trunk pines and Mann Whitney test for trees, with a 95% confidence level. Results showed that the majority of variables that had been analysed in the section of pines had not significant difference. However in the experiment of living tree, I. calligraphus had bigger attack abundance that I. grandicollis in the two species of pines.

Keywords : Pinus caribaea; Pinus tropicalis; Scolytidae; Ips; bark beetle.
