Abstract

VAZQUEZ MORENO, Luis L et al. Occurrence of Epizooties Caused by Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. on Coffee Berry Borer (Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari) in Cuban Coffee Plantations. Fitosanidad [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.2, pp.111-116. ISSN 1562-3009.

Coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari) is one of the main pests of coffee cultivation in Cuba which is managed by agroecological practices, so the study of its natural enemies may be important. In that way evaluations to detect and to identify the natural manifestation of entomopathogen fungi in populations of this pest in the coffee areas of the country, were carried out during the years 1998-2006. As a result of these evaluations female adults of H. hampei dead and micosed was began to observe in the penetration hole of coffee fruits from 1999, those were collected with their respective fruits and were moved to Plant Health Provincial Laboratory for the isolation and identification of the pathogen and later on isolated extracts (strains) were sent to Plant Health Research National Institute to confirm their identity and to conserve them in the national collection of entomopathogen microorganisms that this institution is hosting. Isolations from 17 towns of the eight coffee provinces of the country were obtained, and they were determined as the mitosporic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balm) Vuillemin that was carrying out epizooties in populations of the coffee berry borer (H. hampei), the one that has happened between 21 and 98 months after the detection of the pest in the different territories.
