Abstract

Background: Tobacco consumption starts in adolescence or at the beginning of adulthood and it is considered a health problem of great importance. Objective: To characterize the influence of tobacco consumption in adolescents. Methodology:  A descriptive study was carried out from January to December 2013 in a group of smoker adolescents between 14 and 17 years old who were assisted at the Cardio pediatric Outpatient Department at José Martí Pérez Pediatric Hospital from Sancti Spiritus. The used variables were age, sex, smoking habit, amount of consumed cigarettes per day and the motivation for consumption. The information was documented from an interview applied to those patients under study. Results: There was a slight predominance of smoking habit in female adolescents from the selected sample. The majority of them did not practice tobacco consumption daily. The relatives as well as the professors, the boyfriend or girlfriend or the friends played a negative role of great importance in the sample for study Conclusions: Inappropriate smoking habits such as tobacco consumption must be modified in adolescents with the support of the whole society.
