Abstract

GENCEL, Zivko. About «friction» inside fluid mass in motion and along its solid boundary and about energy «loss». RIHA [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.1, pp. 21-30. ISSN 1680-0338.

Common teaching in Fluid Mechanics considers the necessary energy to produce fluid mass movement as «energy loss» in the process of overcoming «friction» inside the moving fluid mass. Both concepts should be renamed in order to get closer to what they are in the scientific truth. The concept of energy «loss» during fluid transport is a contradiction as far as the first law of thermodynamics is concerned. Reference is made to the equation of mechanical energy for real fluids in movement, well known as Bernoulli equation. This kind of simplifications should be corrected in the XXI century at least for the sake of college education.

Keywords : energy dissipation; energy loss; Bernoulli equation; friction inside fluid in motion; college education.
