Abstract

CABRERA DIAZ, Ania  and  DIAZ MARRERO, Miguel Ángel. Cuban vinasse treatment in an anaerobic packed-up ascending flow reactor. RIHA [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.2, pp.41-49. ISSN 1680-0338.

In the sugar and sugar-derivatives industry, the production of ethanol by fermentation in distilleries generate large volumes of effluents. The need to reduce the organic content of these effluents has lead to anaerobic fermentation being considered as an alternative treatment to reduce the impact that would be caused by incorrect disposal of this waste to receiving sources. The present work aims to achieve an efficient system of anaerobic digestion for vinasse treatment. To this end the performance of a continuous vinasse fed anaerobic packed-up flow filter at a laboratory scale is evaluated to determine percentages of COD removal and potential methane production in the reactor at different volumetric loads.

Keywords : volumetric loading; filter packaging; methane; anaerobic treatment; vinasse.
