Abstract

RIANO VALLE, Félix. Froude, Manning and Reynolds contribute to hydraulics in the 19th century. riha [online]. 2019, vol.40, n.2, pp.110-124. ISSN 1680-0338.

Knowing the history and circumstances in which certain scientific events take place, is essential to understand them better. It happens with certain frequency that important contributions are attributed to those who never established it. Without trying to change that reality, it is considered important to know the truth. In this article, the true contributions of three British engineers of the XIX century are revealed: William Froude, Robert Manning and Osborne Reynolds that, in the framework of the so-called Industrial Revolution, make important contributions to the development of hydraulics. Their names, in some cases with all justice and in another not so much, are inextricably linked to the history of Hydraulic Engineering.

Keywords : Froude; hydraulics; Manning; Reynolds; 19th century.
