Abstract

GUTIERREZ HERNANDEZ, José Evelio; CRESPO REGALADO, Verónica  and  HERNANDEZ CERDA, María Engracia. Intensity and persistence of drought in SW of Guantanamo: use of ISA and IPS indices. riha [online]. 2020, vol.41, n.1, pp.3-17.  Epub Apr 01, 2020. ISSN 1680-0338.

The highest values and lowest frequencies of rain in Guantanamo province, are located in its southwestern part, due to local geographical conditions described here. The intensity and persistence of meteorological drought are evaluated, as key factors of severity of this phenomenon, using the Global Index of Drought ISA and The Drought Persistence Index IPS. Both were used in combined form, according to the established methodology, and had been applied as well in other parts of the country in recent years. IPS is a unique index of its type. Drought degree by years were determined, according to the established categories, and the sequence and persistence of the driest year, during 1982-2015. Results demonstrate that this geographic area shows a severe, steady and increasing drought phenomenon in the last years.

Keywords : drought degree; drought indices; drought intensity; drought persistence; meteorological drought.
