English teaching with Specific Purposes (ESP) has been able to reach a respectable place in the field of English teaching as a foreign or second language. Nowadays, it is familiar to those related to this specialty, the concept of English for engineers, English for tourism, English for managers and businessmen, English for doctors, for nurses and dentists. This work's objective is to offer a panorama of the evolution of ESP from its beginnings. To achieve that, the conditions that propitiated the emergence of the ESP are exposed and that analisis goes on until reaching its definition beginning from the approaches initially exposed in the 80s to the most recent contributions in this area. Finally, the current linguistic and methodological trends ESP has gone through and its current situation are presented
