Abstract

REYES VASCONCELOS, Leimis; DIAZ CAMPOS, Norbis  and  VAZQUEZ LLANOS, Aimeé. Social construction of masculinity in prostate cancer prevention from Primary Health Care. Rev Hum Med [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.1, pp.189-205.  Epub Mar 29, 2020. ISSN 1727-8120.

Prostate cancer is a health problem that is among the leading causes of cancer death in the male population. Although there are multiple actions for its control from medical practice in Cuba, the mortality rate for its cause continues to rise, which highlights the need for scientific approaches that promote its analysis from a social side. The article aims to argue the importance of the gender approach in the prevention of prostate cancer, based on studies highlighting the incidence of social construction of masculinity in the early diagnosis of the disease, risky behaviors developed by men resulting from male stereotypes that condition the development of negative health practices and behaviors, as well as the institutional notions that mediate the structuring and functioning of health programs and influence the process of naturalization of these stereotypes.

Keywords : gender; masculinity; prostate cancer.
