Background: Retinopathy of prematurity includes among its risk factors: birth weight, gestational age and oxygen use. Early diagnosis is crucial. Objective: To characterize infants with risk factors and early diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity. In the study, 47 preterm infants weighing less than 1700 g and presenting a gestational age below 35 weeks were included. All patients underwent mydriatic fundus examination through the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope method. Results: Retinopathy was diagnosed in 9 neonates (19, 1%), all in stage 1 and zone 3; 46.8% of births were between 30 and 32 weeks and weighing over 1501 grams; 97, 1% of them needed to use oxygen at birth. Conclusions: All children who developed the disease presented one or more risk factors.
