Abstract

When we approach the subject of resources optimization in a hospital; medications come to mind immediately for being an important part of the total of expenses. In the group of medications that are to consume in a hospital, antimicrobials are the ones employed more deficiently. Medication prescription to geriatric population is special because aged persons are a vulnerable group due to an altered response of the organism, considering the peculiarities of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodinamics. The most frequent infectious diseases in the elderly are reviewed; even those which cause hospitalization and a practical guidelines is created having in consideration the chosen antimicrobials and alternatives to create a rational therapeutic policy.
