Abstract

LOPEZ, Raikel Bordón  and  MONTEJO SANCHEZ, Samuel. Cognitive Radio and Its Impact on the Efficient Use of Radio Spectrum. EAC [online]. 2015, vol.36, n.1, pp. 42-55. ISSN 1815-5928.

Cognitive radio emerges as a new technology for wireless communication with the potential to solve the actual spectrum scarcity issue resulting from the inefficiency in the spectrum usage. Dynamic spectrum access techniques are a key element in the implementation of cognitive radio technology. In this paper we analyze the four main features that are part of the cognitive cycle to ensure dynamic spectrum access: (1) identification of opportunities for spectrum access, (2) selection of frequency bands for transmission; (3) coordination between users to access the spectrum, (4) spectral mobility. In addition, we provide a summary of the most popular testbed used in cognitive radio research and discuss the recent efforts made by various institutions in order to establish regulations for opportunistic spectrum usage.

Keywords : dynamic spectrum access; spectrum sensing; cognitive radio.
