Abstract

LESME JAEN, René; MARTILLO ASEFFE, José Alfonso  and  OLIVA RUIZ, Luis Oscar. Study of the corn cob gasification of the for the electricity generation. Ingeniería Mecánica [online]. 2020, vol.23, n.3  Epub Dec 01, 2020. ISSN 1815-5944.

In this work, an energetic-environmental analysis of a new scheme for corn harvesting in Ecuador was carried out which includes the corn cobs gasification for the generation of electricity. From experimental evaluations of the volume of cobs per hectare and their energy potential, gasification experiments are developed to evaluate the production of electricity in an internal combustion engine. This was followed by an analysis of the environmental impacts and an economic valuation of a gasification plant to cover the demand for electrical energy during corn shelling and deliver electrical energy to the grid. As a result, it was obtained that a 40 kW gasification plant can generate 70.96 MWh per year at a level cost of electricity of 0.23 USD / kWh, with a reduction of 12.7% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to burning the corn cob under the open sky.

Keywords : corn cobs; gasification; electricity generation.
