BARRIOS TABARES, Dariadna  and  ALFONSO LEON, Alina. Demographic aging and challenges for cultural services. Experiences in La Habana Vieja. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2019, vol.15, n.29, pp.119-128.  Epub Oct 15, 2019. ISSN 1817-4078.

Cuban population shows high levels of aging throughout the island. This process fosters the gradual transformation of public policies in different areas in order to bear with, the challenges of this development. Since several decades the Social Program of Elderly Care, promoted by the Office of the Historian of Havana, has been managing in its network of museums and cultural centers, different activities for elderly people. One of them called “Andares virtuales” belongs to the Summer Project “Rutas y Andares” At the very beginning it focused on family walks through Old Havana. Nowadays it is possible to conduct virtual visits, very popular among elderly. The article makes an assessment of the participants in the period 2016-2018, with a survey that explores demographic characteristics and important indicators in the analysis of the success of a cultural action. Intentional sampling was used based on access to people, resources and time available for the application. The results show first of all the importance of addressing aging with a multidisciplinary and intersectoral approach which takes into account the rights perspective. It is essential to strengthen existing policies, particularly the cultural policies.
