Abstract

HERNANDEZ MARTINEZ, Jorge. Inmigration, Simbolism and Perceptions of Threat in the American Society. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2019, vol.15, n.30, pp. 64-74.  Epub Apr 15, 2020. ISSN 1817-4078.

This paper analyses the context in which the representations that make immigrants an alleged threat to national security and identity in the United States that feed a cultural symbolism that resurfaces a favorable environment in the current conditions of American society. The presentation tries to move away from conjunctural frames and although it focuses on the political framework of the current Trump Administration. The approach flows smoothly through previous periods, presenting the processes under analysis as an interactive sequence between present and past. These are reflections that respond more to an interpretive sociological effort than to a diligent investigation that empirically questions reality. The intention is to contribute to the exchange and intellectual debate on the subject, formulating eventual hypotheses to develop and verify in later studies.

Keywords : cultural identity; immigration; national security; symbolism; threat.
