In the present work, an assessment of the progress in the fulfillment of the SDGs is made in Latin America and the Caribbean and how globalization processes have affected the Higher Education, generating insufficiency and limitations in the process of linking with society. The work is based on the analysis of national and international documents and the experiences of the authors in teaching, research and linkage, in their studies and research of sustainable development from the university. The study is supported by international statistical sources. The work concludes with a set of reflections that can contribute in its conception, within the university, to develop and consolidate a culture of quality that responds to the interests of society, of the community, as a support for local sustainability, taking into account that the students come from there and that some time they were teachers, so as not to lose the roots of the Community & University.
