The University of Cienfuegos, Cuba, in the new millennium, has been immersed in the process of migration to free software, in compliance with a policy outlined by the country in this regard. Among the advantages of this policy are the technological independence, economic savings for the payment of patents and the democratization of knowledge. The research was carried out with the objective of analyzing the influence that the use of free computational tools has in the process of teaching - learning of Mathematics, to promote the democratization of knowledge in university students. The proposed goals are analyzed, from 20 years ago to the present, in relation to the democratization of knowledge. A study is made of existing computer tools, based on free software that can be used as an alternative to proprietary software in the teaching - learning process of Mathematics. The benefits are analyzed of the use of free software and presents results obtained using a free mathematical assistant in the Computer Engineering career of this university.
