Research is one of the most relevant processes of the universities since it allows generating knowledge to contribute to the solution of the socioeconomic problems of their environment of influence. One of the main limitations in theory and practice is related to the way in which the performance of this important process is measured, which is why this research is carried out with the aim of proposing management indicators to measure the performance of the process. of research in higher education institutions. Flowcharts were established with the subprocesses and activities of the research process, each of the activities that make up the subprocesses were characterized and, in addition, a group of indicators were proposed to measure the performance of research in institutions of higher education in Ecuador.
