Abstract

The development of medicine, like other sciences, has its antecedents in prehistory and has accompanied man in his historical development. However, the emergence and development of medical specialties, as well as resident training processes, as the most frequent modality for the training of specialists, is much more recent. The present work tries through a historical overview to analyze the influence of the development of Science and Technology in the emergence and development of medical specialties and their training processes. In it, the particularities of the historical moment that have conferred on the training processes of medical specialists, the different stages through which it has passed and the new challenges to face due to the effect of globalization, the development of the information and communication technologies, as well as the explosion of scientific information with the consequent obsolescence of knowledge.
