The environmental problem of the 21st century requires the prioritized attention of whole society, because the survival of mankind is being staked on it, reasons that require a rethinking of the process of environmental education that we have been carrying out, based on a thorough investigation in the current conditions, in which the improvement of the National Education System is projected, in order to satisfy the needs of an adequate Environmental Education for Sustainable Development, for all levels of education. That is why it is proposed to set up a team of researchers to address this priority. The article presented was developed within the framework of the research project: “Improvement of Environmental Education for Sustainable Development in the National Education System”. It includes an analysis of the expression of the environmental dimension in the Primary Education curriculum, from the analysis of the model, the objectives, the contents, the textbook and some existing guidance, to reach the diagnosis regularities of the environmental content of the curriculum, and determine the potential of it to address contemporary environmental issues. It also offers the objectives by grades and the system of knowledge proposed to address the subject matter.
