Abstract

RUIZ-QUINTANA, Juan et al. Preliminary characterization of Cajálbana mineral deposit for metallurgical purposes. Min. Geol. [online]. 2018, vol.34, n.3, pp. 321-333. ISSN 1993-8012.

The main chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of Cajálbana mineral deposit located in Pinar del Río province - Cuba, are preliminary determined in this research. Eight composites obtained from 470 samples from 80 vertical wells were analyzed. By means of the Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) method, chemical determinations were made of the following elements: Fe, Ni, Co, Mn, Si, Al, Mg and Cr. With the mapping profiles by using Georadar (GPR) geophysical method, the geological mapping itineraries and the magnetic and mineralogical susceptibility analysis and these determinations allowed to establish the predominance of pyroxene peridotites for the deposit (iron, nickel and chromium minerals) and classify it as lateritic-saprolitical to be processed by the Cuban metallurgical mining industry.

Keywords : Cajálbana mineral deposit; Cuban laterites; pyroxene peridotites; ferronickel industry.
