Abstract

AGUIRRE-BREFFE, Yoel et al. Microstructure of gray cast iron FG 24 subjected to heat treatment. Min. Geol. [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.1, pp. 140-159. ISSN 1993-8012.

The microstructural characterization of the transformations that occur in gray iron FG 24 subjected to thermal treatment was carried out. Six samples of the alloy were annealed at the same temperature (740 °C) but for different times (2 hours in one treatment and 3 hours in the other), with furnace cooling. Microstructures of lamellar graphite flakes were obtained in both treatments in a ferrite matrix, with size 4 of graphite for two hours treatment and size 3 for three hours treatment. It was evidenced that type A distribution of the graphite is maintained in both cases. This property varied in the hardness profiles from 230 HB for the standard sample, to 160 HB for the longest residence time in the furnace.

Keywords : gray iron; microstructure; annealing; lamellar graphite; ferrite.
