MARTINTO GALVEZ, Mariam Trilce; SOARES BERTHO, Ana Carolina  and  DA SILVA FERREIRA, Gustavo. Traffic accidents in Brazil in the period 2000-2019. Infodir [online]. 2022, n.39  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 1996-3521.

Introduction:

Road traffic accidents constitute a major public health problem at the international level and represent an important cause of death. Hence the need to study the trends of these events and identify the factors that lead to them.

Objective:

To describe the trends in mortality due to traffic accidents in Brazil in the period 2000-2019.

Methods:

To estimate the trend, the specific mortality rates due to traffic accidents in that country were calculated. These indicators were described by sex of the victim, and deaths were disaggregated by type of vehicle involved in the accident.

Results:

Specific mortality rates due to traffic accidents remained stable between 2000 and 2010. From that year on, they showed a slight increase, reaching their maximum values in 2012. After that date it slowly decreased. In 2019 it presented a value of 15.16 per 100 000 inhabitants, the lowest of the period. Men were the main protagonists of these events. Pedestrian and motorcycle accidents resulted the most frequent.

Conclusions:

In recent years, an incipient tendency to decrease and a predominance of men in most of the accidents can be seen, the specific mortality rates for traffic accidents in Brazil oscillate in the period under study
