Abstract

HERRERA IBANEZ, IsaacRodolfo; OROZCO OROZCO, Eugenio  and  MUJICA CERVANTES, Albi. Strategy for the use of the hydric resource underground in a semi-arid area of Guatemala      . Rev Cie Téc Agr [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.3, pp.12-18. ISSN 2071-0054.

Groundwater plays a critical role in the maintenance of a high life quality of population in the semiarid zone of Guatemala. Groundwater uses in the rural regions are: drinking water, industrial, commercial and agricultural water consumption. Following this concerns, the objectives of this research were to determinate the main areas of water recharge and propose effective strategies for the water management of the watershed. The groundwater is generally confined in a local aquifer in fractured volcanic rocks. The water recharge of the watershed is estimated around eight million cubic meters per year.  The water budget indicate that water extraction with the development of mechanical water wells is feasible, representing a strategy to water management.  As a result of this research it is recommended to improve the technical assistance to municipalities and small water systems to develop and implement local groundwater protection programs.

Keywords : semiarid zone; water recharge; groundwater; water management.
