In this study, the efficiency of cutting piña and leaves of Agave tequilana Weber plant was evaluated by using a mill of articulated "Y-shape" knives. Studied factors influencing the efficiency of cutting will be used in the design of the crushing head of a harvester Agave prototype-crusher, that has the purpose of getting adequate raw material used in the diffusion process for the production of bioethanol. The cutting efficiency was defined as percentage of agave pieces smaller than 5 mm measured transversely to the fiber, recommended value for efficient diffusion. Cutting efficiency of leaves was evaluated using a factorial arrangement 2x2 completely randomized design with four replicates. The factors were: angular velocity of the rotor at 1500 and 2000 rpm and feeding angular position of the leaf with rotor axis as reference: 45 and 90 degrees. Results shown that position of the leaf does not affect the efficiency of cutting, while an efficiency of 94,95% at 2000 rpm was significantly higher than 91,25% at 1500 rpm. For the cutting efficiency of piña the influence of speed at 1500 and 2000 rpm was studied using t-test for independent random samples and four replicates, which showed higher cutting efficiency at 2000 rpm.
