Abstract

An estimation was made of the water uptake of wheat and sorghum in the State of Mexico by means of the recalibration of the coefficient KT, for the estimation of the reference evapotranspiration (ETo). Because the method recommended by the FAO is that of Penman-Monteith and at times the necessary variables are scarce, the tendency is to use simpler methods such as the Evaporimeter Tank method. Therefore, the objective of the present study is centered on the recalibration of the coefficient KT for the estimation of ETo and to spatially determine the water deficit of wheat and sorghum for the State of Mexico, by means of the implementation of the meteorological data base of CONAGUA-SMN. The comparison of the methods was made by means of the standard deviation of the error, correspondence index and the quotient between both estimations of ETo. Results indicate that the average water deficit for wheat and sorghum was 88 mm and 10 mm, for the period May-September and May-August, respectively. Furthermore, the Evaporimeter Tank method recalibrated using its KT coefficient, may be used to estimate ETo and reduce the overestimation or underestimation of the method.
