Abstract

AGUIRRE CORDON, Maritza Raquel; VANEGAS CHACON, Eddi Alejandro  and  GARCIA ALVAREZ, Nancy. Evaluation of the trophic status of Lake Izabal, Guatemala. Rev Cie Téc Agr [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.1, pp. 28-31. ISSN 2071-0054.

The surface waters are the main biotic bodies that continuously receive polluted effluents due to change in land use, especially when secondary forests are converted into agricultural areas for exports purposes. Therefore, it is important to monitor the quality of surface water bodies, in the case of Lake Izabal,it was established bimonthly by the Authority for the Sustainable Development of the Basin Lake Izabal and Rio Dulce (AMASURLI). This research evaluated the trophic status of the water of Lake Izabal based on the index of Carlson, the historical record of total phosphorus concentration in water samples on 22 points inflows to the lake was analyzed during the time series 2005 to 2014. It was concluded that Lake Izabal is in a eutrophic state and has a tendency to improve its trophic status during the rainy season, the areas with high trophic status are Río Polochicfor intensive agricultural activities; Jocoló for mining; and Playa Dorada for tourism.

Keywords : surface water quality; carlson index; total phosphorus.
