Abstract

The food shortage for the cattle in low rainfall season causes weight and production loss in lactating cows. This study aims to prove the viability of replacing palm sludge instead of pasture during scarcity periods maintaining meat and milk production levels of lactating cows. It was counted with five treatments in which 2, 5, 8 and 11 kg of palm sludge was added to the pasture over one treatment without addition (control) for 60 days. During this period of time the weight of the milk and the animal was recorded every three days. For the animal weight variable was obtained that the best and worst treatment corresponds to the control and 11 kg palm sludge respectively; for milk yield variable the best treatment is 11 kg of palm sludge and worse treatment is the control. It was concluded that the treatment of fed cows with 5 kg of sludge palm has a good ratio of animal weight and milk production since both variables ranks as second best treated with a variation of 11% and 9 50% respectively.
