PhD programs in Administration and Management are diverse, highly demanded, and generate strong competition among schools and faculties, as well as high individual, organizational and social expectations. The objective of this work is to analyze the distinctive characteristics of this type of programs and discuss the main future trends to improve doctoral training adjusted to the high quality standards prevailing in the world. In this sense, from a broad review of reports and publications generalizations are made, so that various authors and approaches are taken into account to offer an overview of the evolution of doctorates that, taken together, can serve as guidance to face the future.
