Nowadays, Cuba is undergoing major changes as a result of the updating of its economic and social model. In the last few decades, self-employment has played a leading role in solving increasing economic problems. “Entrepreneurship” means, however, more than just subsisting, and it has characteristics which don’t occur in all types of self-employment. This raised the following question into which a research was carried out - What aspects should self-employment have, so it can be considered entrepreneurship? In order to answer it, it was necessary to examine the characteristics of business activities performed by the self-employed in Havana, which can be considered to be entrepreneurships. The research was based on data given by the Cuban National Tax Administration Office (ONAT, according to its acronym in Spanish) on the evolution of self-employment and its relation to entrepreneurship.
