Background: the curriculum of Psychology undergraduate studies states that the disciplines and subjects must be integrated, so that their contents support the development of the necessary skills for the professional performance of future graduates. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in order to characterize the limitations of the discipline Study of the Spanish Language concerning the correspondence of its content with the logic of the profession and the development of communication skills at the Medical University Branch in Sagua la Grande, from January 2010 to July 2012. The universe of study consisted of 76 students and their teachers. Different methods, techniques and instruments were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and qualitative data analysis were used for processing the information. Results: some irregularities were detected in the syllabi of the subjects Spanish Grammar and Writing and Style Workshop I, of the discipline. The components of the mother tongue that are associated with the professional logic, and the development of communication skills, are not exploited, in spite of being necessary tools for the development of skills. Conclusions: these syllabi have irregularities in their design and practice. They do not correspond with the level of education. The discipline has a structuralist and prescriptive approach. It does not include all the possibilities that can be exploited, based on the different components of the language, in terms of communicative situations related to the professional practice of the students.
