Abstract

HERNANDEZ GOMEZ, Marilyn et al. Training of medical students in dengue prevention and control. Rev EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2014, vol.6, n.1, pp. 174-187. ISSN 2077-2874.

Background: the training of the general practitioner is essential in the control and eradication of dengue in the community. Objective: to determine the medical students' readiness for the prevention and control of dengue. Methods: an observational, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Villa Clara, from March to May, academic year 2012-2013. An anonymous questionnaire was administered to 185 fifth-year medical students in the rotation stay of Public Health. Results: it was found that 40.5 % of students had unsatisfactory results due to difficulties in the command of clinical forms, diagnosis and treatment. All of the students reported having received training activities related to the theme in different subjects, mostly theoretical activities, with the exception of the elective course on dengue. Positive results were achieved in students with previous experience in the treatment of patients and in screening. Conclusions: it was concluded that there is not enough training in the prevention and control of dengue, considering the role that future graduates should play in the community.
