Abstract

GARCIA ORTIZ, Yaritza  and  CRUZ PACHECO, Yileny. Perception by the teachers of medical sciences about their students with low academic performance. Rev EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2014, vol.6, n.3, pp. 111-127. ISSN 2077-2874.

Background: the analysis of the teaching-learning process constitutes a necessary line of research in order to define the nature of the relations that are established between teachers and students. Objective: to characterize the perception of a group of teachers of medical sciences about their students with low academic performance in the Medical Faculty of the Medical Sciences University of Villa Clara. Methods: a descriptive and transversal research project was done at the central venue of the Medical Faculty of Villa Clara. To obtain the data two questionnaires were applied to a representative sample of 66 teachers selected at random, and an interview was conducted with 11 key informants. For processing the data, the analysis of content and the statistical package SPSS, version 18.0, were used. Results: the teachers give greater importance to the motivational variables and to the aptitude for studying in the determination of the academic results. This has an influence in the fact that these students be totally assessed as students of low intellectual quotient and demotivated for their studies. The teachers perceive, also, that there are insufficiencies in the work done by their colleagues with these students for numerous factors: shortage of time, little motivation for their teaching job and difficulties with some pedagogical skills. Conclusions: some inadequate beliefs and stereotypes about the students with low academic performance were verified, that limit the relationship teacher-students.
