Abstract

Background: acute Herpetic Gingivo-stomatitis is an infectious viral disease which appears with great frequency in breast-feeding children or under six years old. Objective: to design a Professional upgrading program for general practitioners through which they can acquire the necessary abilities and knowledge for a complete management of the Acute Herpetic Gingivo-stomatitis, in order to promote actions for a better diagnoses and treatment of this disease. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from September2012 to July 2013. Different methods were used, Theoretical methods: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction, for the theoretical foundations and updating of bibliography, empirical methods: review of documents: to confirm the presence of the contents related to Acute Herpetic Gingivo-stomatitis in the syllabuses of the Medicine career, the survey: it was applied to general practitioners for the data collection in order to diagnose their knowledge about the topic, Mathematical methods: for the analysis of absolute and relative values. Results: the knowledge general practitioners have on acute herpetic gingivo-stomatitis is insufficient to diagnose and treat patients. These contents are not present neither in the syllabuses of regular courses nor in the ones of upgrading courses, it was designed a professional upgrading syllabus for this reason, that was valued by the Criteria of Specialists method. Conclusions: the program was designed according to curricular and didactic requirements. It is pertinent, accessible and it has and adequate scientific and methodological treatment of the topics.
