Abstract

Background: in the curricular design of the subject History of Cuba, universal and national knowledge of the history of the profession are approached, but they don't include outstanding elements of the local context where the students are formed in a comprehensive way. Objective: to characterize the knowledge on Pinar del Rio local history as an educational necessity of the Medicine students. Methods: it was carried out a descriptive research work in Pinar del Rio University of Medical Sciences during the academic year 2013-2014. Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis, induction-deduction and historical-logical; and empiric ones: documental analysis for the revision of the basic text History of Cuba and the lesson plans, and the survey in questionnaire form was applied to the students and professors to verify the level of knowledge and the necessity of including elements of Pinar del Rio local history in the program. Results: low historical knowledge was evidenced on aspects related with the history of medicine in most of the students. All of them and their professors considered important to acquire them to achieve a comprehensive personality and the formation of values in the future health professional and they coincided in the necessity of creating material aids related to the topic. Conclusions: to strengthen the historical knowledge on aspects related with Pinar del Rio local history constitutes a fundamental purpose to reach at present. The inclusion of this topic to educate the new generations of health professionals outlines new challenges and missions for the professors of higher education.
