Abstract

Background: the steady education through the post grade teaching contributes to consolidate a solid and competent professional formation. Objective: to identify the learning necessities in the residence for doctors who begin their specialists' formation in correspondence with the principles of the continuous education. Methods: it was carried out a cross-sectional descriptive investigation during the academic year 2013-2014 in the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical-Surgical Hospital. The study population comprised the total of registered residents (109) an accidental sampling of 36 was selected out of this population. Theoretical methods of analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction were applied and empiric ones: a survey in questionnaire form was applied, so that the residents self-assess the reached abilities. Results: in the self-assessment on their performance as doctors, most consider that it is good, that most of them possess the necessary general abilities for their professional performance and those related with health promotion, the topics in which the residents want to receive continuous education are those corresponding to diagnostic procedures, Clinical laboratory, Imaging and Electrocardiography fundamentally and Medical Urgencies. Conclusions: the opinions of the interviewed residents denote inadequacies in the abilities related with the clinical diagnosis, treatment and diagnostic procedures. These necessities should be early identified and solved through the continuous education.
