Abstract

GUTIERREZ, G.D. et al. In situ ruminal degradability of the dry matter of henequen (Agave fourcroydes) bagasse. Technical note. Cuban J. Agric. Sci. [online]. 2018, vol.52, n.1, pp.19-24. ISSN 0864-0408.

To characterize the incubation kinetics and determine the in situ ruminal degradability parameters of the dry matter of the henequen (Agave fourcroydes) bagasse, a cow from Dexter breed, with 350 kg of live weight, fistulated in rumen was used. It was fed with concentrate (6 g kg LW-1) and free access to forage, water and mineral salts. A total of 24 dacron bags were used, incubated in rumen by quadruplicate (72, 48, 24, 12, 4, 0 h). The maximum degradation was reached in the last incubation hours (48 h: 63.39 % sv 72h: 63.62 %, P <0.0001), with values for a, b, c and ED k = 0.02, 0.04 of: 28 %, 36%, 0.06 % h-1, 55 % and 49 %, respectively. It is concluded that the variations presented during incubation kinetics and in situ rumen degradation parameters of dry matter confirm the possibility of using henequen (Agave fourcroydes) bagasse in ruminant feeding. However, studies on the degradability of the rest of the nutrients, characterization of ruminal fermentation and microbial populations are required.

Keywords : rumen; ruminal fermentation; dynamics.
