Abstract

ARRIOJAS TOCUYO, Dany Day Josefina  and  MARIN VELASQUEZ, Tomás Darío. Scientific production in engineering: comparative analysis of South American countries from 2008 to 2018. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.3, pp. 84-93.  Epub June 02, 2021. ISSN 2218-3620.

The objective of the research was to compare the scientific production in the engineering area among the countries of South America during the period 2008 -2018. We obtained data on number of documents published by each country, citation ratio by documents and percentages of self-citations, extracted from the Scimago Journal Ranking Web site during the study period. The data were tabulated and processed by means of graphs and statistical analysis to compare by means of analysis of variance of Kruskal Wallis and equality of distributions of Kolmogorov Smirnov the trends of the variables, with a significance value p = 0.05. It was obtained that significant differences exist between the amount of documents published by the countries, standing out Brazil and Colombia, likewise differences were observed in the scientific production in engineering with respect to the variable percentage of self-citations, equally with Brazil and Colombia as the countries with the highest percentage of this variable and Venezuela as the country with less percentage of self-citations. With respect to the variable citations by documents, no significant differences were observed, which indicates that the importance of the documents is similar, regardless of the country, since the citations by documents are also similar.
