Abstract

IZQUIERDO SANCHIS, Eva  and  SOLAZ-PORTOLES, Joan J.. Scientific inquiry ability of pre-service primary school teachers: effects of gender and prior training. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.5, pp. 109-120.  Epub Oct 30, 2022. ISSN 2218-3620.

The aim of this work was to determine the level of scientific inquiry competence of elementary school teacher trainees. Other objectives were to analyze the influence of gender and studies prior to university entrance on the various elements of scientific inquiry, and to evaluate which of these elements are more difficult. For this purpose, a scientific inquiry questionnaire was administered to 178 Spanish students of the Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education. From the scores obtained in the questionnaire and the statistical tests carried out, it can be concluded that: a) the scientific inquiry ability shown by these teachers in training is low; b) the identification of the dependent variable, the issuing of hypotheses and the design of experiments are the most difficult elements; c) female participants and those who previously studied a Science or Technology itinerary show a higher competence in scientific inquiry.

Keywords : Scientific inquiry; Pre-service primary teachers; Gender effects; Prior training effects.
