Abstract

GARCIA BRITO, Oswaldo Edison; RIBADENEIRA VACACELA, Andrea Sofía; JIMBO GALARZA, Mónica Cecilia  and  SANCHEZ BURNEO, Carmen Hortensia. Contribution of English for specific purposes in the strengthening of the agricultural lexicon and professional profile of the Agricultural Engineer. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.5, pp. 659-667.  Epub Oct 30, 2022. ISSN 2218-3620.

The learning of a foreign language such as English is undoubtedly a complementary tool of great importance for the profile of the professional of the current century, as is the case of the agricultural engineer. However, it is common to observe that the English program offered to students during their university studies only includes general aspects of the language, which are very useful for their daily life, but not in their professional, technical and scientific environment. The present study proposes the promotion of English for specific purposes in agronomy students through the evaluation of their satisfaction with lexicographic material that provides them with the meaning and pronunciation in English of all the agricultural vocabulary necessary during their professional training and the determination of their training needs in this language. The results obtained show a high level of satisfaction on the part of students and professors with the implementation of the proposal, as well as the dissatisfaction of recently graduated professionals who did not have such preparation during their university training, which directly affects their competencies and professional performance.

Keywords : English for specific purposes; Agricultural engineering; Lexicographic material; Level of satisfaction.
