Background:

colorectal cancer is the third most frequent neoplasm in the world population. It is extremely important to identify the factors for the prognosis of this type of neoplasia in the aging population as a vulnerable group.

Objective:

to describe the risk factors for colorectal cancer in family medical office number 9 of the Cecilio Ruiz de Zárate Teaching Polyclinic in Cienfuegos.

Method:

a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with patients older than 50 years of family medical office number 9 of the Cecilio Ruiz de Zárate Teaching Polyclinic. The universe studied was 277 patients of both sexes, to whom a clinical-epidemiological survey for colorectal cancer was applied. A data form was applied to collect sociodemographic variables, identification of symptoms and risk factors for colon cancer, as well as their stratification. Descriptive statistics were applied to determine the frequency. The results are shown in tables of frequencies and relationship of variables for analysis.

Results:

the 50-59 age group prevailed, male, 55.2 % with risk factors and 24.1 % with some symptoms, of which the most frequent are changes in stool habits, diarrhea, constipation and tenesmus as well as abdominal pain at times. Inadequate diet and smoking predominated as risk factors, and the majority presented a medium and moderate risk stratification for colorectal cancer.

Conclusions:

the age group of 50-59 years prevailed and the male sex. The most prevalent risk factors were inadequate diet and smoking.
