Abstract

PULIDO CARABALLE, Anabell; DIAZ-ASENCIO, Misael; DIAZ-ASENCIO, Lisbet  and  ALONSO HERNANDEZ, Carlos. Pollution assessment in dredging sediment from harbor areas of the Cienfuegos Bay (Cuba). cen. az. [online]. 2016, vol.43, n.2, pp.12-23. ISSN 0253-5777.

The characterization of the dredging sediments is essential for environmental license, control and planning in dredging harbors. Sediment pollution was study in two harbor areas of the Cienfuegos Bay. Dredging sediments from "Camilo Cienfuegos" Refinery port and from area IX of Cienfuegos harbor were characterized. In order to evaluate dredging sediment quality, an analysis of water content, grain size, organic matter and trace metals was done. The results show that the trace elements in the sediments are at natural levels. Due to the absent of Cuban rules for these topics, international criteria for sampling, analysis and sediment quality evaluation were used in the study. Results show that these levels can be considered as typical for harbor areas in which authorization for dredging activities in docks and navigation channel should be granted. The results and methodologies will be applied in others Cuban harbors and navigation channel during the environmental license of dredging sediments.

Keywords : Pollution; dredging; sediment.
