Abstract

PALAU CLARES, Raúl; THANH TUAN, Tran  and  SALGADO CASTILLO, Antonio. Automatic determination of the detection threshold of a seismological network.. Rev cuba cienc informat [online]. 2018, vol.12, n.3, pp. 78-92. ISSN 2227-1899.

The real effective threshold of detection of a seismological network is a very important support tool in the process of decision making to install new seismological stations and to improve the seismic hazard estimation. However, the process to determine the threshold is done in a semimanual way by using specialized programs that do not allow to automate the whole process. This has caused that the time to obtain and graph the threshold may take days and is not error free. Considering the above mentioned, this paper aims at implementing an algorithm to automate the procedure of determining the real effective threshold of detection of a seismological network. Using the MATLAB tool, an algorithm was implemented to obtain a map with the network threshold. This map, when compared to previous studies, showed that the isolines of magnitude cover a larger area, which was conditioned by the modernization of the equipment and the creation of new stations as of 2010. To validate the results, they were compared with a number of previous studies, and isolines of equal magnitude were correctly determined and graphed in approximately two seconds. Subsequently, the threshold for the current Cuban seismological network was obtained. These results led to the conclusion that any earthquake of a magnitude greater than or equal to three that occurs in Cuba can be detected by at least three seismological stations.

Keywords : detection capability of a seismological network; isolines of magnitude; real effective threshold of a seismological network; seismological stations.
