Abstract

CASATE-FERNANDEZ, Ricardo  and  SENSO-RUIZ, José Antonio. Cuban open access scientific production in Scopus in the period 2010-2014. Rev. cuba. inf. cienc. salud [online]. 2017, vol.28, n.1, pp. 2-25. ISSN 2307-2113.

A study was conducted to determine what proportion of the scientific production by Cuban authors registered in Scopus in the period 2010-2014 is available by open access, and propose actions to increase access to and use of the results obtained by Cuban science. The journals containing studies published by Cuban authors were classified according to their access model and their self-archiving policies, with the aim of determining the proportion of actual open access papers (golden route) and potential open access papers (green route). It was found that 62.7 % of the Cuban scientific production is available in open access journals, placing the country in an advantageous position in the dissemination of research results by this means. It was also found that 66.8% of the 3 239 papers published in non-open access journals may be made public via the green route, for these journals allow post-print self-archiving. Sensitization and training of authors about open access, adoption of institutional self-archiving policies, development of an infrastructure of digital open access repositories, and advice to editors of national scientific journals in topics related to intellectual property and Creative Commons licenses, are among the main actions proposed to increase access to and use of research results in the country.
