This paper puts forward theories of social and environmental responsibility of universities, and suggests non-formal environmental education as a strategy for the Technical University of Manabi, Ecuador, to fulfill its social and environmental responsibility. This strategy can be an extracurricular tool, with it having philosophical, teaching, environmental, and sociological aspects. Several methodologies are applied, with actors in the university community being taken as subjects. The strategy is composed of seven stages which are as follows: active involvement of actors; non-formal environmental education; introduction to environmental dimension in university teaching; scientific research into non-formal environmental education; promotion and comprehensive grasp of environmental education; environmental legislation, and management tool for universities to fulfill their social and environmental responsibility.
