Abstract

ROJAS MARTINEZ, Janet  and  CARBALLO CONCEPCION, Jorge Alfredo. Self-Employment as a Transforming Element of Geographical Space ‒ Elements for its Analysis. Estudios del Desarrollo Social [online]. 2020, vol.8, n.3  Epub Dec 10, 2020. ISSN 2308-0132.

Since the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in self-employment activities (TCP). As a socioeconomic practice, it materializes in the geographical space, where, with different intensities, it intervenes in the processes of spatial configuration and reconfiguration, influenced by the political and socio-productive structures of where it is carried out. This premise marks the geographic space as the axis of this article, which aims to contribute to the debate on the influence of the TCP in the spatial reconfiguration of territories, from the inter and multidisciplinary approach and the use of new information technologies, especially geographic information systems (GIS). Some elements that reconfigure the geographical space are presented, and factors that affect the spatial structure of the TCP are contextualized and analyzed, as well as their influence on this transformation. In this sense, the role of GIS as efficient tools for analysis, management and decision making related to the activity is highlighted.

Keywords : self-employment; Cuban economy; spatial studies; Geographic Information System (GIS).
